How Perplexity plans for iPhone users...!
Perplexity just dropped a pretty exciting update for iPhone users: pre-orders are now open for Comet, their AI-powered browser, and it's officially launching on March 11, 2026.
If you've been using Perplexity's search engine and loving those instant, well-sourced answers, Comet takes that experience and embeds it right into your everyday browsing. Instead of switching between apps or tabs to ask questions, Comet makes Perplexity the default search engine and throws in a built-in AI assistant that can summarize long web pages, answer follow-up questions on the spot, or even handle practical tasks like booking a hotel or planning travel without you having to jump through hoops.
Perplexity's CEO, Aravind Srinivas, has been pretty bold about this one. He posted on X that Comet will be the "first real competition to Safari" on iPhones. That's a big claim—Safari is deeply integrated into iOS, and even Google Chrome has never managed to steal a huge chunk of market share from it on Apple devices. But Aravind seems confident that Comet's AI smarts, combined with a smooth, "Safari-grade" feel (as he described it), could finally shake things up.
From what we've seen so far (based on the Mac, Windows, and Android versions already out there), Comet isn't your typical browser. It's more like a thinking partner—helping you focus, cut through noise, and get stuff done faster. Imagine reading an article and having the AI instantly pull out key points, or asking it to compare options across multiple sites without leaving the page. That's the kind of workflow Comet is aiming for.
Right now, you can head over to the App Store and pre-order Comet for iPhone. It's free to get started (with in-app purchases for premium features like Perplexity Pro or Max), and once it's live on March 11, it'll automatically download if you've pre-ordered. Note that it's iPhone-only for now—no iPad version mentioned at launch.
Whether Comet actually dethrones Safari remains to be seen, but in a world where AI is quickly becoming table stakes, this feels like one of the more ambitious swings at reimagining the browser. If you're tired of the same old tabs-and-bookmarks routine and want something smarter, Comet might be worth keeping an eye on.
